Hiding from my mother five years

On the five occasions that my grandmother kidnapped me, we were always hiding from mom

"Your mother might get the authorities after us," she would caution me as she rocked me to sleep in the dark.

Sometimes, it took my mother up to a year to find us, and once she hired a private detective to look for us.

No one knows for 6 hours

I worked nights at WBRD and WDUV Radio since 1982 to increase our income.

In fact, the opening of my first mystery novel Kill Cue takes place there, fictionalized of course.

A disk jockey like me is murdered but no one knows for six hours because the station is automated, as was WDUV-FM.

They say to "write what you know" and I did.

Funding fell through 1971

1971, I got a better-paying job as managing editor of a new newspaper called The Houston Convention News.

I interviewed Robert Altman in town filming Brewster McCloud.

I hired a reporter and we put together the first issue when my boss called to say the funding had fallen through and I had lost my job.

But as it turned out eight years later, in 1979, Bob Altman gave me a job in Florida.

Peter's Backyard in the Village 1972

1972 While on a visit to New York City, my mom, Dee, my stepfather Dale, my first wife, Patrice, and I had dinner at Peter's Backyard in Greenwich Village.

They had a 7-foot open charcoal pit. I had filet mignon.

It was $5.50, expensive for a guy who'd been having Mexican dinners with a beer in Texas for $1.25.

We also saw an off-Broadway show called The Mad Show and visited the newly opened World Trade Center's buildings.

(Long before they were destroyed.)

One "R" in Lary is right

My name is spelled with just ONE 'R' in Lary.

It's BurgLARY minus the Burg or

CodicilLARY without the Codicil.

It's also SaLARY without the Sa.

TuteLARY minus the Tute.

Most important: It is VocabuLARY without the Vocabu!
