In 1968 I was in U.S. Navy boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois and they decided to show a movie to us. What do you show a bunch of white boys? Yes. "She"
She is a 1965 British fantasy adventure film about an archaeologist and two companions who find a lost city ruled by a mysterious queen whose love holds the promise of immortality.
The Hammer Film-Seven Arts co-production stars Ursula Andress, Peter Cushing, and Christopher Lee.
Even Peter Cushing, as adept he is at bringing dialogue to life, can’t quite overcome the triteness of the script, and Ursula Andress comes across as unexpressive throughout the movie.
Later, they gave us "liberty" to spend a day in Chicago. We went to the Windy City by train and the sight of so many sailors coming from the train station was awesome.
A few of us went to see Elvira Madigan, a 1967 Swedish film based on the tragedy of a Danish dancer working as Elvira Madigan at her stepfather's travelling circus, who runs away with the Swedish nobleman lieutenant Sixten Sparre. Review: "Candidate for the prettiest motion picture ever award."
After the film I had a few too many banana daiquiris and threw up on the train back to boot camp.
If someone told me back then that I would end up happily married to a lovely Danish-American girl, I would not have believed it.
But thankfully, it happened in 1998, thirty years later.
